How to Prepare Your Child For Their First Dance Class

The back-to-school season is in full swing, and that means not only a return to school but also the return of extracurricular activities! If your child is taking on dance for the first time this fall, you're in for an exciting journey! Dance classes can be a wonderful way to build confidence, improve coordination, and have fun. However, getting your child ready for their first dance class requires a little preparation. Here are some practical tips to help you and your child make the most of this new adventure.

Setting Your Child Up for Success

1. Explore Different Dance Styles Before Signing Up

Before committing to a particular type of dance class, take some time to explore different dance styles with your child. You can use music, TV shows, and movies to see what they naturally gravitate toward. Whether it's ballet, jazz, hip-hop, or tap, letting your child express their preference will make them more excited about attending class.

2. Set Expectations and Encourage Effort

It’s important to remind your child that learning to dance takes time and effort. While they might have visions of instant pirouettes and perfect leaps, they need to understand that dance involves a lot of practice and patience. Remember, dance is more than just twirling about on tippy-toes—each style has its own unique techniques and terminology that need to be understood. Encourage them to do their best and reassure them that it’s okay if they don’t get everything right the first time. Suggest dancing outside of class, but don’t force it—make it a fun, pressure-free activity.

3. Attend an Open House if Possible

If the dance school they’ll be attending offers an open house or opportunity to observe a class, make sure to attend. Visiting the studio ahead of time can help your child feel more comfortable and familiar with the space on the first day. It also gives them a chance to meet their teacher and some of the other students, which can ease first-day jitters.

4. Prepare with Proper Attire

Proper dance attire is key to a successful class. Make sure your child arrives dressed appropriately—whether it’s a leotard and tights for ballet or comfortable fitness clothes for hip-hop. If the class requires specific shoes, like ballet slippers or tap shoes, have your child wear them around the house a few times prior to class to ensure they fit well. Having the right attire not only shows respect for the teacher but also allows them to more accurately assess your child’s form.

5. Pack a Well-Stocked Dance Bag

A well-stocked dance bag is essential. Pack everything your child might need during class, including shoes, a towel, water, socks, bandaids, extra bobby pins, and hair clips. This preparation helps avoid any last-minute scrambles and ensures your child is ready to focus on dancing. Be careful not to overpack the bag, as unnecessary items can end up being a distraction!

6. Rest and Refuel Before Class

Make sure your child is well-rested and has had a snack before heading to class. Being tired or hungry can make it difficult for them to focus and enjoy the experience. A well-rested and fueled child is more likely to have a positive first dance class.

7. Arrive Early on the First Day

Arriving 10-15 minutes early to the dance class can make a big difference, and should be done for every class, not just day one. It gives you and your child time to settle in, put shoes on, put away belongings, and use the bathroom. On the first day, this extra time allows your child to get a feel for the space, meet the kids in their class, and feel more comfortable before the class starts. Plus, being in place and ready when class begins ensures they won’t miss warm-ups, important instructions, or updates. And the teacher appreciates that!

8. Explain the Structure of the Class

Talk to your child about what to expect in their dance class. Explain that it will just be them and the teacher in the room—no parents, but you’ll be waiting to hear all about it afterward. Let them know that they’ll meet new friends and learn new things, and that it’s okay to ask questions if they’re unsure about anything.

9. Form Goals and Show Interest

Setting small, achievable goals can help motivate your child. Whether it’s mastering a simple move or just having fun, having something to work toward can keep them excited about dance. Even if dancing isn’t your thing, showing interest in what they’re doing and asking them about their dance class afterward can make them feel supported and eager to continue.

Now It’s Time to Enjoy Day One

Preparing for a first dance class is about more than just packing the right gear. It’s about setting your child up for success by making them feel comfortable, excited, and ready to learn. By exploring different dance styles, arriving early, and ensuring they have the proper attire and mindset, you can help your child make the most of their dance experience. As they step into the studio for the first time, they’ll be ready to twirl, leap, and dance their way into a fun and rewarding activity!
